US-New Zealand Naval Agreement Aimed at Countering China
Washington’s decision to end a 25-year ban that prevented New Zealand
naval vessels from docking at American ports is the latest sign of a
U.S. effort to foster allies in the Asia-Pacific region as part a buffer
against continuing Chinese expansion. While a minor diplomatic gesture
of goodwill toward New Zealand, LIGNET regards the U.S. move as
indicative of a strategy aimed at countering China’s military buildup,
as well as its near and long-term threat to the region and American
interests.
