Like everyone else, I have to pinch my pennies. I have to budget for
every dime of expense that my family makes. Gone are the days of
blithely tossing stuff into the buggy at the grocery store (or anywhere
else for that matter). My main focus is only on those things I need, not
the things I want.
In that vein, I had always put my preparedness needs and product wants
into the category of "wants." In the back of my mind they weren't
essential, not the way the groceries, the utilities, and the clothing
allowances were essential.
However, in recent days I've begun to rethink that mindset. I know that
the world has been seen as a less secure place for all of us considering
the economic problems we've all been having. But events over the last
few days have made it glaringly apparent to me that the world is a very
hostile place physically as well.
We don't just have a radical threat to the safety of our embassies and
countrymen overseas - we have one here, on American soil, as well.
According to a preparedness network I have access to, there were 7 cases
of bomb threats phoned in to universities last Friday, with the media
reporting on only three of them. There was an additional threat phoned
in to Louisiana State University this week.
According to this same preparedness network, the National Guard was
placed on riot control alert as massive civil unrest was expected in
light of these bomb threats, and it advised its members to prepare in
case things started getting worse.
As I sat here watching all this unfold, in the back of my mind was the
niggling thought that I wasn't as prepared as I should have been should
the pooh really hit the fan.
As embassy breaches and university bomb threats continue to rear their
ugly heads, are you also beginning to have the unsettling feeling that
maybe you aren't as prepared as you ought to be?
