South Africa has stated its intention to increase the amount of renewable energy in its total portfolio and is on track for its first off-grid utility-scale solar PV system as part of its plans to increase power supplies from independent producers. As global demand for South African coal, platinum, palladium and chromium increases, so do power supply constraints due to capacity challenges faced by Eskom, South Africa's utility. The PV plant will help temper these challenges. JinkoSolar and Solea Renewables will deliver the 1 MW chrome mine power plant capable of generating approximately 1.8 GWh of electricity per year, reducing the mine's daytime diesel dependency for the next 20 to 30 years. The fully integrated turnkey PV system will use 4,170 high efficiency polycrystalline PV panels The plant should be complete by October of 2012.
