Bald eagle found in Rhode Island landfill euthanized
The bald eagle found shot near a Rhode Island landfill in February was discovered to have permanent brain damage by her caretakers and had to be euthanized, WLNE-TV reported. The eagle, known as Eleanor, was initially treated for the shot wounds by the Wildlife Rehabilitators of Rhode Island and then transferred to the Raptor Trust in New Jersey. The trust euthanized Eleanor on March 16, after determining that the shotgun pellet lodged in her brain had caused permanent damage that would prevent her survival in captivity, the report said. "After several weeks of evaluation and supportive care, there were still no signs of progress in her condition," the Raptor Trust announced on their Facebook page. "Given that she was deemed unable to sustain herself in captivity, and would have required daily force feedings for the duration of her life, the decision was made to humanely euthanize her. "We are all deeply saddened by this outcome, but wish to thank everyone who worked so hard to save this eagle."
