I've been thinking a lot about the idea of setbacks lately. Maybe you're lucky enough to have never experienced one, but I highly doubt it: setbacks are as much a part of life as the rising and the setting of the sun. (But despite this, we always seem to be surprised when they come along, oddly enough.) Whether it involves a job, relationship, finances, your health, or something else, you've probably already suffered dozens of setbacks in your life.

Even successful people have setbacks. Thomas Edison tried hundreds of ways to construct a commercially viable light bulb before he finally succeeded. When questioned about his failures, he responded: "I have not failed 700 times. I have not failed once. I have succeeded in proving that those 700 ways will not work. When I have eliminated the ways that will not work, I will find the way that will work." It was this type of attitude when facing setbacks that helped him eventually succeed.

As someone interested in off-the-grid living, you're already facing future setbacks head on. You are ahead of the game because you aren't living with your head in the sand--you've got your eyes open, ready to take on anything that comes at you. So when troubles start to come your way, remember that you can overcome these obstacles. And if troubles haven't surfaced on the horizon yet, get ready--they're probably closer than you think.

The main thing you have to remember is that setbacks don't define you; rather, how you handle them is what shows your true mettle. By working through them and learning from your mistakes and experiences, you become a better, wiser person for it.
