NEW ORLEANS -- Police say a homeowner had to defend
himself Sunday after a man entered his home on North
Broad Street and began fighting the people inside. The
homeowner shot the suspect, who later died at the
hospital.
The shooting happened after 2:15 p.m. inside of a home
in the 1500 block of N. Broad Street.
NOPD spokesman Officer Garry Flot said the suspect
entered the home and began fighting with the people
inside. According to the Orleans Parish Coroner's
Office, the intruder was from Colorado.
At some point, the home owner shot the suspect "to
protect himself," Flot said.
Flot said two NOPD officers had seen the suspect moments
earlier. They were responding to a call of a person
"that was bloody and acting irate in the street," Flot
said, and when they went to question him on Laharpe
Street, he pushed one of the officers and fled down
North Broad.
The officers lost sight of him, and later heard one
gunshot coming from the home where the shooting
occurred. Apparently the people inside the home didn't
know the suspect, and fired at him in self defense after
the suspect began acting irate in their home, Flot said.
No charges have been filed against the homeowner.
The suspect's motive is unclear. Flot said the suspect's
identity was still not known as of 7 p.m.NEW ORLEANS --
