Systemic Corruption

I’ve gotten to where I don’t even want to watch the news anymore. There is a systemic cancer of corruption that has infected our government on every level, from local governments to state governments, and throughout every facet of the federal level that exists. I really think these people have become elitist ignoramuses, and there is nothing more useless than an elitist politician.

President Obama can casually sit on the Tonight Show and lie through his teeth about domestic surveillance programs. Americans are hurting in numbers calculated in the millions because of the lack of jobs, and yet the Congress is seriously negotiating an amnesty deal that will bring more than 12 million illegals to the economic table. States are actively pursuing Constitution-infringing laws and gun control measures so that they can keep the masses in check. Unconstitutional search and seizure is a daily occurrence across the nation, and little Hitlers goosestep into our lives in varying forms (child protection agencies, SWAT teams, judges, lawyers, law enforcement officers of various types, tax assessors, city councils, country boards of supervisors, mayors, school administrations, federal regulators, federal agencies, etc.) and think they have the right to tell us how we can and cannot live our lives.

But the fact is, the shadow of tyranny began long ago, even at the beginning of this great experiment called the United States of America. Andrew Jackson said: “I weep for the liberty of my country when I see at this early day of its successful experiment that corruption has been imputed to many members of the House of Representatives, and the rights of the people have been bartered for promises of office.”

Thomas Jefferson wrote: “Our country is now taking so steady a course as to show by what road it will pass to destruction, to wit: by consolidation of power first, and then corruption, its necessary consequence.” What we are experiencing now is nothing new. James Buckley said: “This source of corruption, alas, is inherent in the democratic system itself, and it can only be controlled, if at all, by finding ways to encourage legislators to subordinate ambition to principle.”

Jefferson spoke of a time such as this: “The people can not be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty.”  We are experiencing that death now. What are our options?

In no way are we suggesting that armed rebellion is the answer at this point. We must however, rebel at every level of government that we can through citizen involvement and actively casting our ballots. We must get out and encourage our neighbors to not give up the fight. We must continue to fight for liberty, for our Constitution, and for our government of, by, and for the people. However, make no mistake… there may come a day when we’ll have to make a choice.

Jefferson knew the choices would be hard, but he never shied away from reality and neither should we. Do not let this thin veneer of western civilization fool you into thinking that man has evolved any more than he was in the 1700s and the founding of this country. We are all sinners in need of a gracious God, and that fact hasn’t changed since we were created. Our hearts have not changed since we were created. It is only through the grace and forgiveness of God, through walking in His precepts, that we can be more than we are. I leave you with Jefferson’s parting words. Take them to heart. Meditate on them. Decide now where you will stand. You may be called upon one day to make a stand for liberty.

“What country ever existed a century and a half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it's natural manure.”
