US coal output falls 0.4% year-on-year in week ended Saturday: EIA

US coal production in the week that ended Saturday totaled about 20 million st, 4% below output in the previous week and 0.4% below that of the comparable week of 2012, the Energy Information Administration said Thursday.

EIA, which bases its estimates on railcar loading data, said production east of the Mississippi River totaled 8 million st in the week ended Saturday, while output west of the Mississippi totaled 12 million st.

Year-to-date coal production totaled 583.6 million st, 3.4% below that of the comparable year-to-date period last year, the agency said.
