Analysts Forecast the End of the Beginning for Advanced Biofuels IndustryBryony Abbott,
Green Power Conferences 11 November 2013 – It is the “end of the beginning” as the arrival of new infrastructure clearly shifts the advanced biofuels industry from largely R&D to becoming a true commercial scale industry and closer to true profitability. Recent announcements from Navigant Consulting’s “Biofuels Market Data” Report and E2’s Annual Advanced Biofuels Assessment both forecast the continued steady growth of the Advanced Biofuels industry as commercial scale plants finally come online in 2014. E2 tracked 160 commercial scale facilities either planned, under construction or complete from a total of 159 companies. Navigant forecasted that a total of USD$69bn will be invested in the sector, E2 forecast that advanced biofuels could grow by 40-60% by 2015 and Bloomberg New Energy further estimating that global biofuels production will increase by 200% by 2030. These forecasts are based on a broad base of players who are succeeding in overcoming the many engineering, finance and practical logistical challenges to launching new biorefinery infrastructure and their new feedstock supply chains. Leading companies such as Abengoa, Beta Renewables, DuPont, Enerkem, INEOS Bio, KiOR, and POET-DSM all have this technology under their wing and are waiting to expose their successful commercial scale plants as early as possible. All the above companies will be demonstrating their progress at the 9th annual World Bio Markets a three-day conference and exhibition will take place at a time when years of bio-based research and development transitions towards a profitable, revenue generating industry. Uniting 1500 bioenergy experts and with over 180 speakers from the 4-6 March in Amsterdam, World Bio Markets 2014 is Europe’s largest gathering for the biofuels and bio-based chemicals market. With two full day conferences on Advanced Biofuels and Finance, speakers will go in to greater detail on the advent of cellulosic ethanol and other advanced biofuels and how to attract finance to build new infrastructure.
