Total power demand was up a percent from November 2012. However, gas-fired generation fell by two percent and coal fell nine percent, according to a report from Genscape.
The Generation Fuel Monitor Report found that nuclear generation is up 13 percent than this time last year; that is believed to be a result of the unplanned outages in 2012 caused by Hurricane Sandy and the number of units offline last year. Ferry 1, Point Beach 2, Prairie Island 1, Sequoyah 2, Summer, Surry 2, and Waterford 3 100 percent online this year versus being offline in 2012. Overall, 31 nuclear units ran at least 15 percent stronger in November 2013, while only 15 were at least 15 percent weaker. Late refueling outages in 2012 also drove down the nuclear output, making it the lowest seen since November 2001.
Renewables continued to grow, up 20 percent this month compared to 7 percent November 2012.
Year-to-date gas-fired generation lags 2012 by 12 percent. Coal currently holds a 4 percent increase.
