Seawater Reverse Osmosis System for Supplying Potable Water for Ras Al Khaimah

The Background

The Federal Electricity and Water Authority in the United Arab Emirates is responsible for providing the electrical energy and water in the northern Emirates. The authority intends to install a seawater reverse osmosis plant in Ghallilah, Ras Al Khaimah. The plant will produce 18 million gallons of fresh water. The scope of work includes design, manufacture, supply, construction, erection, testing and commissioning of the complete plant.

The product water will be pumped to the permeate tanks for further distribution, while the brine will be discharged to brine outfall which will also be constructed on the seashore. The Facility The desalination plant, based on reverse osmosis technology is designed to produce fresh water from seawater from the Arabian Gulf .The raw feed water has salinity of 42,000 ppm (fresh water salinity should be less than 500 ppm). Aquatech has designed this plant to handle and overcome the red tide phenomena which is caused by algal blooms during which algae become so numerous that they discolor coastal waters. The algal bloom may also deplete oxygen in the waters and/or release toxins that may cause illness in humans and eventually shut down the desalination plant

The Solution

Aquatech has designed and built the plant on an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) basis that produces 18 million gallons per day of potable water. The system consists of the following:

1. Seawater intake screening 2. Seawater intake pipe 3. Shoreline protection 4. Intake chlorination system 5. Pump house concrete structure 6. DAF system 7. Ultrafiltration skids 8. High pressure pumps with Energy recovery device 9. Seawater reverse osmosis skids 10. Reminaralisation system 11. Post chlorination unit 12. DCS system 13. Transformers and switch gears 14. Electromechanical Installation 15. All the civil works related to the plant The feed TDS is 42,000 ppm. The plant has been designed to produce fresh water which meets the WHO standard for fresh water with design recovery of 40%.
