Workers with Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) started
removing nuclear fuel assemblies from Unit 4 at the
Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan. As of
December 5, TEPCO said it has removed 44 of the 1,533
assemblies from the fuel pool. The process is expected to be
completed in 2014.
Removing the assemblies from the spent fuel pool is one of the first steps in decommissioning the plant. TEPCO has posted a YouTube video showing how the process works.
