Bald eagle found at Rhode Island landfill was shot, vets say

An ailing bald eagle rescued at the Central landfill in Johnston, R.I., was shot, according to veterinarians trying to save the bird.

A Facebook post from Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Rhode Island, where the bird was taken after being discovered on this week, indicated the bird had what appears to be three buckshot pellets in its chest, leg and tail area.

Earlier, officials said they believed the bird was injured from the blizzard that hit the area.

"All of the information has been passed on to state and federal authorities so that a criminal investigation can get under way," the association indicated on Facebook.

The two-year old eagle was found lying flat with its head down at the landfill. Veterinarians have been treating the bird using intravenous fluids and a feeding tube, the Providence Journal newspaper reported.
