Blizzard-battered bald eagle saved at Rhode Island landfill

A female bald eagle, battered from last weekend's blizzard, was rescued on Feb. 12 and is currently being nursed back to health, according to a local news report.

The estimated 2-year-old bird was found in pretty bad shape at the Central Landfill in Johnston, R.I., and taken immediately to a local animal hospital.

The veterinarians treating the eagle said at first they weren't sure if she would make it.

"She was just laying flat with her head down," Dr. Meredith Bird told NBC 10 News. "So we gave her IV fluids. She may have been cold, underfed, stressed, just having a rough go of it with the storm."

Doctors are feeding the eagle through a tube because she's so weak, according to the report. Once she is stronger they will feed her some fish.

While it may be a long recovery, the doctors hope to eventually return the bird back into the wild, the report said.
