First Dutch sustainable 'green gas' station opens in Port of Amsterdam

The port business community and Port of Amsterdam itself possess an abundance of expertise and experience in the field of energy. They know energy generated by renewable sources is an economic opportunity. Especially for the centrally located Port of Amsterdam, with its state-of-the-art facilities for storage and handling, processing, production, establishment and increasing number of activities in the field of 'green energy'. The port of Amsterdam area is leading in mineral energy, rising in renewable energy and enterprising in the bio-based economy. New addition to this bioenergy hub: Holland's first sustainable 'green gas' station. Port of Amsterdam is passionate about providing a substantial contribution to renewable energy and bio-based economy. The opening of Orangegas' station has created a closed loop sustainable - a marvelous development in line with Port of Amsterdam's ambitions.

Successful collaboration

Port of Amsterdam has welcomed the first Dutch 'green gas' station. Owned by Orangegas, the station provides sustainable fuels only. The establishment was made possible by three parties: Waternet, AEB and Orangegas. Sewage treatment company Waternet converts residual sludge into biogas, which is then turned into green gas by Amsterdam-based waste and energy company AEB. Waternet has been supplying AEB with biogas for the generation of electricity and district heating for many years. Production levels recently rose to 11 million m3 of biogas, around 1 million m3 of which had to be incinerated due to over capacity. However a new installation manufactured by BioGast created an alternative solution, converting the non-processed biogas into green gas. And so the collaboration between Waternet, AEB and Orangegas was created. Today green gas can power a car for 13 million km.

First gas station solely offering sustainable fuels

The green gas station is accessible to both private and business consumers as more and more companies switch to renewable fuels. Waternet, AEB and Waste Service West fleets have been partially converted to green gas in a bid to get more of Amsterdam's dustcarts running on renewable fuel. This will contribute to a cleaner city and result in lower CO2, nitrogen and dust particle emissions. Other companies in the Amsterdam port area are also reducing their use of fossil fuels. The Orangegas green gas station is highly sustainable and also offers a charging location for electric vehicles.

Energy plant

It is expected that Waternet and AEB will produce around 20 million m3 biogas by 2020, of which 10 million m3 can be converted into green gas. The port of Amsterdam houses a number of biogas production companies. Total production can reach 30-40 million m3 biogas annually. In January 2013 a study commenced on how much gas can be produced in the Amsterdam port area (short and long term). The results could lead to the construction of a biogas hub complete with high-performance green gas energy plant serving the port and surrounding area.

Bio-based economy in the port of Amsterdam

Port of Amsterdam has the ambition to provide a substantial contribution to renewable energy and bio-based economy. A world-class energy port and an excellent base for the development of cleaner energy solutions, Port of Amsterdam believes it is only right that it provides a contribution as it continues to establish new and extend existing partnerships with customers and innovative startups.

Port of Amsterdam excels in establishing a strong market position for the renewable energy sector, in addition to the agribulk and recycling sectors, in order to compete with the fossil fuel energy segment. This makes the port a strategic location for a bio-based economy.

Port of Amsterdam allocates space and invests in collaborations for the development of bio-based activities in the port area. It is passionate about synergy and is aiming towards the formation of clusters and cycles, in which one company's residue is another company's raw material, and waste collected in the city and surrounding region is converted into raw material and energy.

The opening of Orangegas' green gas station has created a closed loop sustainable - a marvelous development in line with Port of Amsterdam's ambitions.
