Golfers tee off to zero waste tournament in Phoenix![]()
As golfers gear up for the first round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open today, the company behind the action is working to ensure the event is environmentally responsible, including being landfill free. Advertised as "the greenest show on grass," the golf tournament will feature recycling and compost bins instead of trash cans. Water use will be monitored and wastewater from the event's kitchens will be recycled for use in portable toilets. And all awards will have at least one sustainable element such as reclaimed or recycled materials. Waste Management is aiming to achieve Gold Certification from the Council for Responsible Sport for its efforts at the event, a distinction that no golf tournament has yet achieved, according to the event's website. The Waste Management Phoenix Open runs through Feb. 3.
