Plastic bottles under attack during Super Bowl

We already know that Coach Harbaugh is going to lose Sunday's Super Bowl; now we know something else that's going to get a beating -- at least for 30 seconds -- plastic beverage bottles.

Soda Stream, the at-home soda maker, has shelled out millions (the ads cost up to $4 million for a 30-second spot) to air a spot that shows plastic bottles disappearing – with a loud "pop" – from stores, trucks and warehouses whenever someone presses down on the lever on the soda maker. All this with a voice saying, "With Soda Stream, we could have saved 500 million bottles on game day alone."

Here's the ad that's set to run on Sunday:

"500 million bottles and cans are manufactured every day in the U.S. and less than 50% are recycled, causing untold damage to our environment," Soda Stream CEO Daniel Birnbaum said in a statement. "Our ad confronts the beverage industry and its arguably out-dated business model by showing people that there exists a smarter way to enjoy soft drinks.

"One day we will look back on plastic soda bottles the way we now view cigarettes; as a dangerous vice, not as an easily-accepted feature of everyday life."

Soda Stream has also placed a "rejected" Super Bowl ad on YouTube. The company says the ad was rejected because it clearly identifies the "two Big Soda brands."

Here is the "rejected" ad:

Pepsi and Coca-Cola are also advertising on Sunday, according to Advertising Age, a sister publication to Waste & Recycling News.
