"Freedom and Tradition"

As I write this, I am attending the annual Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show in Las Vegas, also known as the SHOT Show. If you've been privy to the world of firearms for any amount of time then you are likely familiar with this event, but in case you aren't, the SHOT Show is the world's biggest convention in the firearms, personal defense, hunting, and survival industry. Virtually every relevant manufacturer, publication, organization, and association in the world has a presence at this giant show, and it is an awesome event to be a part of.

Participating in the SHOT Show is an exciting opportunity for me and the USCCA, and I am always surprised by the cool new things that happen here every year for our company. And while the main purpose of my time spent at the SHOT Show is related to what we do at the USCCA, I also can't help but have a deep personal connection with what shows like this are all about. You see, for me, shows like this remind me of my sons and the common bond we share around firearms.

Where we live, in Wisconsin, winter comes quickly and sharply. It was just several weeks ago that my boys and I were out shooting together in 10 degree weather. I realize that many people would quickly pass on going shooting in 10 degree weather, but my boys have tried and true Schmidt blood running through their veins! It could have been 10 below zero, and we would have been out there, bonding around a tradition and craft as old as our nation.

You may be asking, "Tim, what's your point?" My point is more sentimental than anything, but it points to the very heart of why the USCCA even exists...

While many people forget home while they're in a warm desert full of casinos (and guns), my mind and heart are nearer than ever to the very reason I do what I do with my life. This show is a resounding reminder to me that we are a part of something greater than ourselves. We are a part of something more important than the 2nd Amendment. We are a part of a story that will be passed down through memories and quality time spent with friends and family. We are a part of something that will shape our future, long after we have passed on.

If you are anything like me, you know that the value of investing in our future is as important as it's ever been. The question is, how are we investing in it? While there are many ways I am choosing to invest in the future, I know that the most important place I can start is with those tough little Schmidt boys of mine.

So here is my challenge to those who need to hear it: Go out this week with a friend or loved one and invest in the future. Create a bond that is thicker than words, and teach those who you care most about to become more prepared, self-reliant, responsibly armed citizens.

Take care and stay safe,
