It should be blatantly clear by
now that we live in a society that no longer knows how to take
responsibility for their actions. I would throw out some phrase like
"kids these days..." but the truth of the matter is that the apple
doesn't fall far from the tree when it comes to the young people of
America.
My sister works as a teacher at a local school, and the stories that she
tells me would raise my hair if it weren't for the fact that I spent
three years in education myself. So no, I am not surprised that every
year she has several students who refuse to pay attention in class, do
their homework, or study for tests, and then blame her when they are
failing. What is a little shocking, however, is the number of parents
who are on the same bandwagon. Instead of making their kids buckle down,
these parents would much rather pass the blame on to the teacher. But
then, how do you think their kids learned the fine art of buck passing
in the first place?
I could keep going with the stories. My husband, who works for a large
publishing company in town, commented to me one evening recently that
they were having a hard time finding college interns and graduates for
openings in their company. It isn't that students and grads aren't
applying; it's that the company has to let them go after only weeks or
months because the new hires simply won't work. And then they are
shocked and angry when they are fired. Isn't it their right to have a
job?
But again, how do you think these young people developed an entitlement
mentality? Is it possible that the parents who handed them life on a
platter contributed somehow? Is it possible that they learned a lack of
responsibility from the same people who say that shootings are the gun
industry's fault rather than the individuals committing those crimes?
One of the foundations of off-the-grid living is the idea that we live
self-sufficiently. In other words, we, and we alone, are responsible for
our survival. If our society expects to survive, we must pass on that
mentality to future generations. It is our responsibility.
