A multi-stage rocket launched by North Korea in defiance of international sanctions on December 12, 2012. North Korea's threat yesterday that it intends to “settle accounts with the U.S.” by the use of force was unusually vitriolic and troubling in that it appeared to erase signs of moderation by Kim Jong Un. It was also a direct challenge to President Barack Obama and American leadership in the world.

The threat puts North Korea on an unalterable path to the testing of a nuclear weapon later this year. This test may fail but will still provide North Korea with a wealth of information that it can use to further develop its nuclear weapons program.
