West Liberty Foods achieves landfill-free status at Iowa plant

An Iowa foods company is now diverting more than 99% of its waste from a local landfill, achieving landfill-free certification from a third-party verifier.

West Liberty Foods LLC said the company achieved landfill-free status in less than one year, an move certified by NSF International Strategic Registrations Ltd.

The company has now diverted more than 2 million pounds of waste from the local landfill, the company said.

"This accomplishment marks a significant milestone in the history of our company, our industry and our state," said CEO Ed Garrett in a statement. "Being 'landfill free' is a testament to our team, and it is my hope that other companies will see our success here and undertake similar initiatives in their own business."

The Iowa site joins other company sites in Tremonton, Utah, and Mount Pleasant, Iowa, in achieving landfill-free status, the company said.

West Liberty foods calls itself a private label manufacturer and food service supplier of deli meats and fully cooked individually quick frozen products. The company supplies products to retail and food service chains around the country.
