Health e-Tips

I've always believed that a wise man never counts his chickens before they hatch. But if you're serious about keeping one of the most deadly forms of cancer from hatching in your body, new research out of Harvard University recommends you start counting your chickens -- and fast.

A recently published study of 20,000 women has shown that incorporating more chicken into your diet -- and, no, nuggets don't count -- may help you steer clear of deadly colon cancer that claims more than 50,000 lives a year in the U.S. alone!

Here's the scoop. Researchers asked 19,771 women between the ages of 34 and 51 to answer questions about their dietary habits during high school -- you know, when a can of Pringles and a Mountain Dew could count as lunch. Then, the study tracked the health of the female volunteers over a full 10 years.

And get this -- women who ate the most servings of chicken during their high school years had a dramatically lower risk of ever developing the colon tumors that often progress to cancer!

Believe me, the results were nothing to cluck about. Researchers found that women who replaced just one serving of red meat a day with chicken were able to slash their risk of colon tumors by a whopping 40%! Substituting red meat for fish produced similar results.

The average teenager may not care much what they put into their bodies -- but it's clear that their embattled colons mind quite a bit, thank you. Colon cancer can literally take years to develop, and poor dietary habits at an early age can put you on the fast track to cancer in adulthood.

Researchers didn't uncover a link between colon cancer and red meat, per se, but I strongly suspect the problem is actually with processed meat. As we've shared with you before, processed meat has been linked to a variety of cancers, and the average teenager is loading up on this junk food one disgusting Big Mac and corn dog at a time.

We all know a teenager who needs to eat better -- and if you don't, you should probably be considered for parent or grandparent of the year. If you're planning your teen's diet, start incorporating more organic chicken, and make Quarter Pounder value meals a thing of the past.

A little help from our fowl friends now may keep your child or grandchild colon-cancer free later in life. And, believe me, colon cancer is one wolf you want to keep far away from your hen house.

Oh, and while the jury is still out on how much chicken helps us older folks when it comes to colon cancer, the truth is there are already lots of other good reasons to replace a meal that's weighted down with processed red meats with healthy organic chicken instead.
