Is Energy Efficiency Improving in the United States?

American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, by Sara Hayes, Naomi Baum & Garrett Herndon, July 2, 2013

A new study, "Energy Efficiency: Is the United States Improving?" provides an assessment of 15 national indicators. The indicators show that the United States is becoming more energy efficient, but the improvements measured are generally small indicating that the U.S. is still wasting tremendous amounts of energy. There has been progress with savings from state energy efficiency programs and appliance standards, the fuel economy of new passenger vehicles, and reduced energy intensity in residential buildings. However, there has been no measurable progress in the use of public transit or in reductions in the energy intensity of freight transport, and the U.S. is backsliding in how much industrial electricity is generated by combined heat and power.
