NRC rumored to consider voiding ruling that led to SONGS closure

NRC San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station SONGS Southern California Edison Atomic Safety Licensing Board ruling public hearing

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff is considering voiding a ruling that was central in Southern California Edison’s decision to shutter the troubled San Onofre nuclear power plant, KPBS reports.

The decision of the Atomic Safety Licensing Board to require public hearings prior to any restart of the San Onofre plant led Edison to move to decommission the plant. A representative of Friends of the Earth, the environmental group that pushed for the public hearings, now says the NRC may vacate that decision, voiding it from the record. Such a move would reportedly not affect Edison’s decision to close San Onofre but could affect precedent on such matters for other communities in the United States, KPBS reports.
