Renewables Account for 29% of New Electrical Generating Capacity During First Five Months of 2013

According to the latest issue of FERC's "Energy Infrastructure Update"
with data through May 31, 2013, renewable energy sources accounted for
28.7% of all new in-service electrical generating capacity in the U.S.
for the first five months of 2013. Wind led the way with 958 Mw followed
by solar (881 MW), biomass (116 MW), hydropower (72 MW), and geothermal
(14 MW). However, natural gas accounted for 4,097 MW of new capacity or
57.7% while coal and waste heat provided 925 MW (13.0%) and 30 MW (0.4%)
respectively. Oil and nuclear power had no new capacity added.
