Benjamin Franklin predicted this day would come. At the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, someone asked Franklin as he exited Independence Hall, "What kind of government do we have?" Franklin answered, "A republic ... if you can keep it." I fear it is slipping out of our grasp with every passing day.
