Phoenix set goals to divert 40% of waste from landfills by 2020

Phoenix is launching a solid waste sustainability program that will focus on diverting 40% of waste from landfills by 2020, according to a city press release.

Phoenix's diversion rate of 13% for fiscal year 2011-2012 is below the national average, the report said.

To help them reach the 40% diversion goal of their 40 by 20 initiative, the city is teaming up with Arizona-based Earth911 Inc., an Infinity Resources Holding Company; and Calif.-based Citizen Group, a branding and advertising agency, according to an Earth911 news release.

Both companies will aid in public outreach, education and communication throughout the project. They will also help evaluate the best practices of model cities to devise a solution that will allow the city to achieve its diversion goal, the report said.

Phoenix will also house a Center for Excellence in Solid Waste Research as part of the initiative, which will help identify new solutions and uses for solid waste, according to the city.

"Sustainable practices, such as recycling, not only protect our city's natural assets but also spur the local economy," said Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton in a statement. "I encourage all Phoenix residents to do their part in reaching our 40% diversion rate goal."
