Seed packet displays seem to have popped up everywhere, but you need to
give them a wide berth. Most of those seeds are going to give you more
disappointment than anything else.
After all, what is a seed packet? It's a promise. A promise of a great
garden.
The bright blossoms and plump vegetables on most seed packets are little
more than marketing lies. You want to believe that if you pick up some
seeds at the supermarket and throw them in the ground you'll have a
fabulous garden. But the truth is that not all garden seeds are created
equal.
To have a great garden, you have to start with great seeds. You need
seeds that are ready for your soil conditions and the climate where you
live. You need seeds that have been picked for their ability to
germinate and produce for you.
What you don't need is a bunch of marketing hype wrapped up in a skinny
little seed packet.
The Mass Market Seed Swindle
Seed displays at your local supermarket and big-box garden
supercenter sell lots of seeds - but they're not necessarily selling the
best seeds, or even the right seeds for your area.
In January 2012, the US Department of Agriculture released a new
planting zone chart to reflect the fact that North American climates are
heating up. The response from mass market seed distributors was to
update the picture on the back of their seed packets. They didn't change
the seeds or make a big push to re-educate the public about planting
recommendations.
Of course, given the kind of seeds in those little paper packets, it may
not matter. Many mass market seeds come from industrial farm and
greenhouse operations. Those seeds come from plants that have never been
grown in real-world conditions or been a part of a mixed-plant garden in
the open air. Those poor sprouts are never going to know what hit them
when they have to compete for soil nutrients and live in the actual
outdoors... if they even come up from the soil at all!
Large-scale farm and garden producers are using more and more hybrid
seeds and seed stocks that have been "engineered" to do different
things. The seeds from hybrid plants can be a little funky. Sometimes
they grow great, but they can also come up as something totally
different from their parent plant or fail to germinate entirely.
What you do get from these mass market seeds - if you're lucky and they
sprout - tends to be a little bland. The children of greenhouse tomatoes
and carrot farms taste like their mass-produced parents. They may be
large and colorful, but inside there's just not much going on.
It's all one big broken promise. You come home from the store hoping
you've got good, useful seeds that will feed your family delicious
garden produce all season long... but you end up with a so-so garden
spitting out so-so goods.
The Heirloom Seed Advantage
Heirloom seeds are a night-and-day difference from mass market seeds.
It's all in the name, really. These are seeds that have been passed down
from generation to generation with care and pride - the duds have died
out so only the quality remains.
These are seeds bred to thrive in the real world. They don't get a cushy
greenhouse start. Each heirloom seed parent plant lives outside in the
elements, cultivated by independent farmers who care about germination
rates, hardiness, and flavor.
It's a critical difference when you're looking for a garden that will
make a dent in your grocery bill. Heirloom seeds sprout and fight to be
the best they can be so that they will continue to exist as a species.
They know there's no break for bad seeds in the heirloom world. You
sprout or that's it, so they get a move on growing!
Once sprouted, heirloom seeds grow up into hardy plants that can take
real-world weather. The independent farmers who grow heirlooms live
where there are heavy rains, harsh winds, and sudden frosts - sometimes
in the same week! These are plants who can recover from dry spells,
Tornado Alley adventures, and nibbles from the local wildlife, because
that's exactly what their parent plants had to do to survive.
Last but not least, heirloom plants are packed with bunches of
nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables. Heirlooms are bred for yield and
taste, not just greenhouse sizes. Our ancestors wanted enough food to
can and food worth canning. Thus, heirlooms don't always
look as pretty as the stuff in the supermarket, but they taste a whole
lot better! Your kids will actually eat this stuff, and you can trust
that what you put on their plates is good for them, too.
