Policy Shifts Drive US-Israeli Convergence on Iran
Without the tensions that have characterized past encounters, President
Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu met in Jerusalem this week to discuss
their increasingly converging views on Iran. Obama reiterated Israel’s
right to defend itself unilaterally and reinforced the US policy of
prevention, while Netanyahu backed away from previous red lines and
agreed with Obama that Iran would need about a year to complete the
weaponization process. While both leaders have a political interest in
downplaying any open disagreements, substantive policy shifts in both
Washington and Jerusalem appear to be driving this convergence of views.
