Memorial Day

Memorial Day--a great three-day weekend, good sales, delicious barbeques, and the unofficial start of summer. Oh yeah, and something about soldiers.

Isn't that pretty much the attitude in our country today? I don't know about you, but I am continually shocked by the lack of respect and reverence that the men and women in our armed forces receive. It's one thing to disapprove of the conflicts we are involved in; it's another to blame the soldiers who are simply following their orders to serve. It's especially abhorrent to celebrate their deaths. (And by the way, the good folks at Westboro aren't the only ones doing it.)

What's even worse is that most of us can name someone we know who has served or is serving right now. In my case, my grandfather's service to this country means I never really got to know him. He may not have fallen on the battlefield, but the conditions there quickly gave him cancer when he returned. He died before my third birthday.

There are thousands of people waiting for someone to come home, learning that their loved one will never come home, or who are now caring for the physical or emotional shell of the person that left. These families deserve our love and support, but they are often ignored.

I know that many readers on this site are great patriots, but even if you are not, remember that no matter how you feel about the government, the military, or the conflicts America is involved in, the men and women in uniform signed up because they believe in this country. They want to keep it safe and free for you. So don't forget to thank a soldier for your freedom to sleep in, shop, barbeque, and vacation this Memorial Day weekend.

On this Memorial Day weekend, one of our nation’s most solemn and revered holidays we all pause to reflect upon the principles that have made our nation great. We pause to remember the true cost of freedom and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect it. The brave men and women we honor, selflessly gave of themselves to defend a way of life that we all cherish. In celebration of Memorial Day,
