No one said that life was going to be easy
No one said that life was going to be easy. In fact, God just about guaranteed it when He kicked us out of the Garden of Eden. He said we’d get our food by the sweat of our brow and that has proven true since the beginning of time. In addition to the hard labor of being self-sufficient, however, the weather is just not cooperating either. This has been the wackiest year in terms of temperatures and getting a garden in. Here in my area, it hasn’t quit raining. Just about the time things dry out enough to think, “I’ll get out in the garden tomorrow,” here comes another thunderstorm and cool temps. A friend of the family called from Georgia complaining about the crazy weather. He lives in north Georgia, and he had lost the second planting of tomatoes this spring because of the cold temperatures. Up north it’s no different. We see a rise in temperatures and then suddenly, it’s back to cold weather again. It’s making it hard to plant a garden at all this year! That’s one reason it’s important to have food stores put aside during those years of excess. Last year we had bumper crops of green beans, wax beans, and squash. I still have cases of jars left over to tide me through this year as well, which is good since I don’t believe it’ll dry out enough to plant any time soon! (I’m sitting here watching the rain fall even as I type...) We all need to learn to take advantage of those years of plenty to get us through the years of lean. So while you’re trying to work through the cold and the rain or whatever weather anomaly is affecting your area, take a moment to read through the articles we have for you this week. We have the second installment of cooking with a wood stove that we hope you find educational. We also have an article on how to combat depression and mental illness with diet, as well as an article on growing tobacco! (Don’t you know THAT item would be a wonderful instrument of barter when times got tough!) Then last, but not least, men... how to help the woman in your life pick out the best gun for her. Wishing you all a wonderful week, and as always, thank you for being a subscriber to Off the Grid News. We value each and every one of our readers.
