Plan to retire coal-fired plant passes Nevada Senate

Reid Gardner coal-fired power plant Nevada shut down plan approved by Senate

The Nevada Senate has passed a bill that would allow NV Energy Inc. (NYSE: NVE), Nevada’s biggest utility, to retire its coal-fired plants and transition to using more renewable energy, according to the Associated Press.

Under the bill passed by the state Senate, would close the Reid Gardner coal plant in southern Nevada by 2017 and divest 800 MW of coal by 2019, the Associated Press reported. The state’s Public Utilities Commission will also review the rate consequences for the impact on NV Energy customers.

The bill will now move to the state’s Assembly for approval.
