The element of water in myth, astrology and the mystery of life

There are three water signs in astrology: Cancer (moving water, nurturing, creative), Scorpio (deep, still, dark waters as in the deep ocean), and Pisces (mist, fog, water molecules in the air.) People with an emphasis of water in their astrology chart are considered very sensitive, spiritual, compassionate and emotional. Water is a feminine or receptive element and its reactions are not always understood, hence the mystery that surrounds water.

Astrologers having been associating water with emotional sensitivity for thousands of years but it is only in 2005 that a Japanese scientist, Dr. Masaru Emoto, documented in photographs that freezing water changes into different shapes depending on the emotions directed at it. He has a New York Times bestselling book called, The Hidden Messages of Water. He found that loving thoughts created beautiful, clear shaped water crystals, while angry thoughts caused dull, irregular shapes.

According to NASA, "About 70 percent of the human body is made up of water and, coincidentally, more than 70 percent of Earth is covered in water." The idea that the power of our thoughts, like the Law of Attraction, can truly change our lives and affect the entire planet is now being proven scientifically. Water is such a huge part of life yet there is much that science does not understand about it. Water is a very simple molecule, H2O, two hydrogen and one oxygen. Water is the only known liquid that inexplicably expands when frozen.

Scientists have also proven that the gravitational pull between the Moon and earth directly affect the ocean tides. The gravitational pull of the Sun keeps the earth in orbit while the gravitational pull of the earth keeps the Moon in orbit. This all important relationship between Sun and Moon with the earth is emphasized in astrology. The phases of the Moon, particularly the full Moon is said to affect the emotions of people as well as the ocean tides and cause things to get a bit loony. There have been many studies and debates concerning the effects of the Full Moon on people's behavior. The results are inconclusive. Will this mystery ever be solved? Probably not. Water is mysterious and that is its nature.

In Greek mythology, Poseidon was god of the sea. He is depicted holding a three pronged trident and was ruler of the ocean, earthquakes, and horses. He was a Titan of equal strength to his brother, Zeus, who ruled the life on earth and air. The third brother was Hades, ruled the Underworld and hidden wealth in the earth. It is interesting to note that two of the three most powerful gods are associated with water signs in modern astrology: Poseidon/Neptune with Pisces and Hades/Pluto with Scorpio. In traditional astrology, Jupiter rules Pisces and Mars rules Scorpio. Most astrologers will include both planets as co-rulers.

Poseidon was a shape-shifter who would take the form of a horse, his favorite animal. He could also bestow this gift of changing form onto others. Neptune in astrology is known to change, dissolve or confuse things. It can make the unreal seem real. Actors can use this Neptune ability positively to take on another’s personae while performing conversely a scammer can use this same ability to deceive others.

Hades/Pluto rules over death, hidden power and transformation. The hidden power inside of an atom that was discovered in the early 1900s, creating a nuclear bomb, is an example of Plutonic power. The ramifications of this discovery has transformed the world.

Water individuals are emotional, sensitive, secretive, powerful and mysterious. Water is the most supportive and instinctual about life and its gifts cannot be fully explained. Water works silently and it is traditionally considered a mute element.

When studying a natal chart, the houses that contain water are the areas where the person is most sensitive. The Cancer house may be where the need to nurture things and associate with family are strong. The Scorpio house may be where secret activities take place or life-changing events. The Pisces area may be where the individual is unrealistic or spiritual.

Cancer creates and nurtures life; Scorpio transforms and ends life, while Pisces is associated with life after death. How life is created, how life ages and dies, and where people go after life ends are all water mysteries which may never be revealed. These are also the events that stir up the most powerful emotions in people.
