Weatherization program taking regional applications

Audubon Area Community Services is taking applications for its Weatherization Program, which is designed to help eligible homeowners with energy improvements.

The program involves making improvements on such things as furnace repair or replacement, caulking and weather-stripping, water heater and pipe insulation, smoke alarms and energy-efficient light bulbs.

Improvements can help lower energy costs, regardless of the season, said Tony Lindow, the AACS weatherization manager.

Applications are taken all year. Projects are undertaken according to need, with priority going to the elderly, disabled and families with children under 5 years of age.

To qualify, a homeowner must fall at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level, or $47,100 for a family of four. Homeowners must provide income for all household members over 18 years of age for the past year, Social Security cards for everyone in the house, title or deed to the house and gas and electric bills for the last 12 months.

Families must reside in the Green River area counties of Daviess, Hancock, McLean, Ohio, Henderson, Union or Webster.

"This program is designed to improve energy efficiency, household safety and educate the public," Lindow said. "It saves lives by identifying carbon monoxide hazards, poor indoor air quality, molds and other health threats."
