Heal cataracts without painful surgery

Q: I'm 76 years old and have had good vision for most of my life. I still drive and volunteer a few days a week. I was recently diagnosed with cataracts, and the idea of letting someone perform surgery on my eyes has me very upset. What else can I try?

Dr. Wright: Mainstream medicine would have you believe that surgery is the only treatment for cataracts -- but you do have several proven, natural options at your disposal.

In a study published in 2002, researchers tested N-acetylcarnosine eyedrops on patients with cataracts, following their progress over two full years. After just six months, 90% of the patients using N-acetylcarnosine drops showed improvement ranging from 7% to 100%, while patients in the placebo group saw their cataracts worsen. Most eyedrop patients also showed significant improvement in glare sensitivity.

Another option for treating cataracts is a combination of Chinese botanicals called "Hachimi-jio-gan." In a human study of early cataracts conducted in Japan, Hachimi-jio-gan was associated with lessening of cataracts in 60% of the volunteers. In the USA, Hachimi-jio-gan is available as a formula called Clinical Nutrients for the Eyes, which is available from natural food stores, compounding pharmacies, and the Tahoma Clinic Dispensary.

Finally, I recommend 30,000 IU daily of vitamin A (not beta-carotene), and eliminating all sources of sugar and refined carbohydrates from your diet. Your body may pack away excess sugar in the lenses of your eyes, which explains why individuals with type 2 diabetes have a much greater incidence of cataracts.

Give these natural treatments a try, and hopefully they can help you avoid the surgeon's knife.
