NRC will operate through the government shutdown

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) says it will operate as normal for one week during the government shutdown, but there will be changes if the shutdown lasts for a longer period.

NRC said it has enough appropriations to operate normally for approximately one week. When those appropriations no longer support normal operations, NRC will run at a reduced level and begin a minimal maintenance and monitoring mode. Resident inspectors and Headquarters Operations Officers will remain on duty throughout the shutdown.

Licensees can still contact NRC with safety and security issues or incidents involving fraud, waste or abuse. NRC will continue to respond to emergencies, oversee nuclear power plants and fuel cycle facilities, review and analyze security threats and other responsibilities throughout the shutdown.

On Oct. 1, the federal government shut down and employees who were deemed “non-essential” were furloughed.
