San Mateo Resident Kills Home Intruder In Gun Battle

SAN MATEO (CBS SF) — A San Mateo resident shot two intruders in a gun battle that occurred during a home invasion late Wednesday night, killing one, police said Thursday.

The resident was also shot, but survived and was recovering from his wound, San Mateo police Deputy Chief Mike Callagy said at a news conference at police headquarters Thursday morning.

The suspect who was killed has been identified by the San Mateo County coroner’s office as 23-year-old Bryant Ma, of San Jose.

Officers were dispatched to a home in the 1500 block of Lodi Avenue, near South Norfolk Street east of U.S. Highway 101, at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of a home invasion.

They found the victim shot in the upper body, and found signs that a shootout had occurred inside the victim’s home, police said.

“Guns, multiple bullet holes and blood were found at the scene,” Callagy said.

Callagy said it appears three suspects entered the house and confronted four victims inside, and that a gunfight ensued between at least one of the victims and the suspects.

Two suspects were shot, and the trio fled in a dark-colored SUV, police said.

Shortly after midnight, San Mateo police learned that two people with gunshot wounds had turned up at a San Jose hospital. Investigators have determined that those people were the suspects in the San Mateo incident, Callagy said.

One was dead on arrival, and the other had a gunshot wound that is not considered life-threatening, he said.

A third suspect was located at the hospital and detained, and a dark-blue SUV connected to the suspects was found in the hospital parking lot, Callagy said.

“We believe that further arrests in this case are imminent,” he said.

Callagy said search warrants are being sought in order to “better understand the motives of the suspects in this case.”

He said the home invasion was not a random act.

“The suspects specifically targeted this house for reasons that are not entirely clear at this time,” Callagy said.

Police were working with the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office and the county crime lab in the investigation.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call police at (650) 522-7650.
