Japan to construct new nuclear waste storage facilities in Fukushima

Mar 31 - Global Data Point

Initially, the government had proposed to construct three nuclear storage facilities.

The Japanese environment minister Nobuteru Ishihara said that the plan includes construction of the facilities in Okuma and Futaba , dropping Naraha from the earlier list.

The facilities are designed to store contaminated soil and other radioactive wastes from decontamination work after the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in 2011.

According to Ishihara, the Japanese government will provide financial assistance for promoting the development of regions that are likely to be affected by developing storage facilities.

The government will purchase the land for the construction instead of leasing it.
