Protesters to gather at site of Hinkley C

Apr 09 - Western Daily Press (UK)

Green Party MP Caroline Lucas will join party activists and anti- nuclear campaigners in a demonstration at the site of Somerset's proposed Pounds 16 billion Hinkley C nuclear power station tomorrow.

She is seeking to add weight to a submission by the South West Green Party to the EU outlining why it believes a deal between the Government and developer EDF Energy which guarantees the price the company is paid for energy produced for 35 years is in breach of EU competition and state aid rules.

Meanwhile, EDF confirmed yesterday that it will undertake further preparatory works at the site over the coming months, although it has yet to make a final investment decision.

The deal, agreed last October, would mean the French energy giant is paid Pounds 92.50 for each MWh produced - twice the current price. The issue is under investigation and EDF will not make the final decision on the go-ahead for Hinkley until the outcome is known. Dr Molly Scott Cato , lead Green Party European candidate in the South West and the party's speaker on finance, will be attending the demonstration with Ms Lucas and two other Green Party European candidates, Emily McIvor and Ricky Knight .
