U.S. Renewable Energy Production Grows 4.01% in 2013

According to the latest issue of EIA's "Monthly Energy Review" (with data through December 31, 2013), energy production from renewable sources (i.e., biofuels, biomass, geothermal, hydropower, solar, wind) increased by 4.01% in 2013 compared to calendar year 2012. Total energy production from all sources grew by 3.31%. For 2013, renewables provided 11.23% of total energy production (hydropower - 3.13%, biomass - 3.05%, biofuels - 2.44%, wind - 1.95%, solar - 0.39%, geothermal - 0.27%). Renewable sources also accounted for 9.44% of domestic energy consumption in 2013 - up 4.40% compared to 2012; energy consumption from all sources grew 2.44% in 2013. Compared to the previous calendar year, solar energy in 2013 grew by 36.75%, wind by 19.03%, geothermal by 4.25%, and biofuels by 0.48%; however, hydropower declined by 2.59%.
