A nuclear industry group says that U.S. technical standards do not allow Soviet-made reactors in Ukraine to use U.S. nuclear fuel.
The International Union of Atomic Energy and Industry Veterans said that using U.S. nuclear fuel in the reactors could cause accidents comparable to what happened at Chernobyl, according to RIA Novosti. The Czech Republic stopped purchasing fuel from Westinghouse after an incident at the Temelin nuclear power plant a few years ago in which decompression of heat elements occurred.
Westinghouse and NNEGC Energoatom signed a contract extension earlier this month for Westinghouse to deliver fuel in Ukraine through 2020.
