Nuclear waste will be moved

Feb 05 - Western Daily Press (UK)

Campaigners have criticised the decision to move nuclear waste between Oldbury power station and Hinkley Point by road. The Government has said it wants to transport waste from Oldbury, in South Gloucestershire , to the Somerset power station and Berkeley in Gloucestershire .

Anti-nuclear groups say the waste should be stored on site and "properly looked after" rather than driven around the country in lorries.

A consultation by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has been taking place in recent weeks and plans include new storage facilities at Hinkley A and Berkeley. According to the agency, 70 lorryloads of waste will travel to Hinkley and 100 lorries to Berkeley over two years.

Nikki Clark , from the pressure group Stop Hinkley, said the waste "needs to stay where it is and be properly looked after".
