Iraq’s Bloody Day: 115 Killed, 145 Wounded


At least 115 people were killed and 145 more were wounded in a continuing bomb spree in Baghdad and ongoing clashes in Anbar province. Several cities near the capital were also targeted today.

Iraqi forces in Anbar province retook Saqlawiya this morning. An oil tanker was blown up on a bridge near there yesterday, killing three soldiers. Gunmen also took over the town and forced police to hand over weapons. Security forces then launched an airstrike. At least 11 insurgents were killed. In Garma, six soldiers were wounded when a booby-trapped building collapsed around them.

In Baghdad, a bomb killed five people and wounded 12 more at a Shoala market. A car bombing in Shabb left four dead and 14 wounded. Two bombs in Karrada killed six people and wounded 24 more. Three more were killed in Maamil, where a woman’s body was also found. Twelve civilians were wounded in a bombing on Palestine Street. A blast in al-Obeidi left two dead and five wounded. A gunman was killed in Albu Soda. A civilian was shot dead in Jisr Diyala. A civilian was shot dead in Rashid. A roadside bomb killed a civilian and wounded a lieutenant colonel in Zaafaraniya, where a separate sticky bomb killed a policeman.

A suicide bomber killed 18 people at a funeral for a Sahwa member and wounded at least 24 more in Shatib village within the Buhriz district.

Five people were killed and 12 more were wounded in a blast in Husseiniya.

A car bomb in Sadr City left three dead and 15 wounded.

In Mosul, at least six soldiers were killed. Two soldiers were shot to death. A car bomb targeting an intelligence official wounded him and killed six bodyguards. Gunmen killed an elections employee.

Gunmen killed seven employees of a brick factory in Muqdadiya.

Seven soldiers were killed and nine others were wounded, including civilians in a blast at Ain al-Janash.

A suicide bomber in Dujail killed five people and wounded seven more.

In Tikrit, a gunman and two bombers were killed in clashes. A sticky bomb killed a policeman and wounded his brother.

Gunmen killed a soldier in Tarmiya. Three dumped bodies were found.

A roadside bomb in al-Hamra killed three policemen and wounded two more.

A sticky bomb in Jalawla killed a civilian.

A dumped body was found in Sinjar.
