Rainwater & Stormwater Harvesting:

Promoting New Water Use Standards

On June 25-26, 2014, the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE, www.aspe.org) will host a Water Reuse Workshop in Chicago for plumbing industry stakeholders interested in helping shape the future of water use standards for rain and stormwater in United States and internationally.  The American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association (ARCSA) will be integrally involved as the present and past presidents, and a Director will participate.

The goal of this workshop is to gather input for two of ASPE's water use standards: ARCSA/ASPE/ANSI 63-2013: Rainwater Catchment Systems, which was published last year and will be undergoing a revision soon, and ARCSA/ASPE 78: Stormwater Harvesting Systems for Direct and Indirect End-Use Applications, which is under development.

In addition, the workshop will discuss the activities of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO Technical Committee 282: Water Reuse, to include rainwater and stormwater in this standard.  The U.S. TAG, for which ASPE is the administrator, is developing international standards for this expansion for non-potable applications. ARCSA Director, Secretary and Codes & Standards Chairman Neal Shapiro is a member of U.S. TAG Committee.

Engineers, manufacturers, government personnel, code officials, standards developers and other stakeholders are invited to join ASPE and ARCSA in this effort. The results of the workshop will be used to help develop U.S. positions on the use of rainwater and stormwater and will also help guide the consensus bodies on the revision of ARCSA/ASPE/ANSI 63-2013 and development of ASPE/ARCSA 78. ARCSA representatives will be participating in the workshop.  For more information about the workshop, click here.

The mission of the 501(c)3 non-profit American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association is to promote sustainable rainwater harvesting practices to help solve potable, non-potable, stormwater and energy challenges throughout the world.  Through its Standards and Codes Committee, ARCSA leads in the development of user-friendly and practical standards and codes, which promise to promote greater uses of these regularly wasted water resources.

ARCSA is the premier national educational and technical rainwater harvesting organization. Properly designed and installed onsite rainwater and stormwater harvesting systems compliant with the standards and codes they helped develop, can deliver plentiful and safe potable and non-potable water for all uses.

ARCSA is currently accepting tax-deductible donations to produce a comprehensive rainwater harvesting manual written by its many experts and technical writers, and to host on-line and in-person training events across the country. Consult ARCSA's website for rainwater harvesting systems, suppliers, trainings, and research information. For more information, please contact Heather Kinkade, Executive Director ARCSA, at 512.617.6528 or info@arcsa.org.
