Ukraine did not pay for June deliveries of Russian gas before Monday deadline: Gazprom

Moscow (Platts)--8Jul2014/738 am EDT/1138 GMT

Ukraine has missed the Monday deadline to pay for June deliveries of Russian gas, Gazprom said Tuesday.

"The deadline for payment for June passed yesterday, we again did not receive payment from Naftogaz. As a result, Ukraine owes Gazprom $838 million for delivery of 1.7 Bcm of gas delivered between June 1 and June 16," Gazprom said in a statement.

Ukraine's total debt owed for Russian gas deliveries now stands at $5.296 billion, according to Gazprom.

Earlier Tuesday Russian media reports said the debt now stood at $5.15 billion, citing Ukrainian state-owned gas shipping monopoly UkrTransGaz.

"Ukraine's unwillingness to pay for Russian gas has become chronic and once again shows that the switch to prepayment, in line with the terms of the contract, was the only correct decision," Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said, according to the statement.

Gazprom switched to a system of pre-payment for Russian gas supplies to Ukraine on June 16, after requests for payment were repeatedly refused and the two sides failed to agree on a price for the deliveries.
