Balkans river levels to fall further this week to near normal

Budapest (Platts)--9Jun2014/927 am EDT/1327 GMT

River levels across the Balkans region are expected to fall further this week, reverting to near normal levels for this time of year, hydrological forecasts show.

In Serbia, the Danube is forecast to fall 60-70 cm this week, while the river Sava is set to drop 80-85 cm, the Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia said.

Both rivers will dip below long-term June averages by the end of the week.

In Romania, Danube flows entering the country are forecast to fall from 6,900 cubic meters a second Monday to 5,300 cu m/second by the weekend, dropping below the June average of 6,400 cu m/second, according to Romania's National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA).

Downstream of the 2.2 GW Iron Gate hydroelectric power plant, the Danube will fall by 90-120 cm this week, receding below first-degree alert levels at all stations by mid-week, the INHGA said.

In Bulgaria, water levels on the river Maritsa could increase slightly early on in the week, but the river Arda is seen falling in the next few days, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology said.

The Central European catchment area of the Danube will again see relatively modest amounts of rain this week, Hungary's National Hydrology Service reported. Rainfall will not exceed 10 mm along the river's Hungarian, Slovakian and Romanian tributaries, and will total 15-25 mm along German and Austrian tributaries.
