TEPCO restarts ALPS water- treatment system at Fukushima nuclear plant

Jun 23 - Global Data Point

The system, known as advanced liquid processing system (ALPS), at the nuclear power plant purifies radiation-tainted water.

Meanwhile, the system is undergoing test as its three treatment lines have been suspended intermittently due to filter gasket corrosion caused by radiation and other problems.

TEPCO said that it is unclear when the test operations will be completed so that full-fledged operations can start up.

The ALPS removes all types of radioactive materials except tritium from toxic water generated in the process of cooling the Fukushima nuclear reactors that suffered meltdowns in the 2011 nuclear crisis.

The company is targeting to end up processing the toxic water building up at the complex by March 2015.

Around 360,000 tons of toxic water required for processing by ALPS was stored in tanks at the complex on June 18 , 2014.

The facility has a capacity to treat around 750 tons of water per day.
