The water affected by the Feb. 2 coal ash spill at the Dan River is still being tested by the Halifax County Service Authority.
So far, Authority Director Mark Estes says more than $10,000 has been spent on chemicals to treat the water and paying crews overtime.
Estes said they will also conduct an analysis survey to identify where the larger coal ash deposits are located, crews will then work on removing those deposits.
A representative admitted that there are potential risks of being re-exposed since ash has settled in the river.
Worst-case scenario the authority would have a back-up plan, Estes said, that would involve using pumps to pull from an alternate source. But even that would take five to seven days to implement and only holds enough water for drinking, not bathing.
