Source of radioactive water leak in Fukushima Daiichi nuclear unit found

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) said it has found the location of a radioactive water leak at Unit 3 of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Workers found the leak from a pipe joint that penetrates the containment vessel using a camera survey, according to The Japan Times. Workers said the leak is probably happening because the level of the water in the containment vessel is higher than the area where the pipe joint is. The containment vessel still has water in it because it is needed to cool the reactor, the article said. Workers initially found a stream of water running through the unit’s building before going down a drain.

TEPCO said in the article that it plans to calculate the amount of water that is leaking and study ways to stop it.
