Toxic Water Being Used To Water California Crops During Drought

Last month, a story broke revealing that there are several crops in California which are being watered using fracking wastewater in an effort to combat the current drought.

This wastewater is just that – highly toxic and dangerous for use in anything intended for human consumption.

The water comes about through a process known as fracking, during which holes are drilled down into the earth and water is jetted through in an effort to release the gas inside the holes. Through the process, the water is then mixed with a variety of chemicals and oils that it comes into contact with through normal carrying out of the procedure.

Where things become a little twisted is when this water is then used in procedures that are supposed to produce things for human consumption, such as in the watering of crops. It was discovered that this water was used on many crops over the past 20 year period of the California drought.

This comes about as a ‘collaborative effort’ between the Cawelo Water District and local oil firms to recycle wastewater. This saves farmers thousands upon thousands of dollars.

But while it may seem like sensible recycling of resources on the surface, many activists believe that this practice has the potential to be incredibly dangerous to the environment and the health of consumers who partake in the crops.

Many believe the practice to be an experiment that is being performed without the consent of end consumers.
